As part of May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, each year communities across the nation come together to promote mental well-being, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Our beloved city, Austin, is no different. With its vibrant culture and community spirit, it’s no surprise numerous events are taking place to support this important cause. Whether you’re seeking educational resources, community connection, or creative outlets, there’s something for everyone this month.
But first—why do we observe this month at all?
What is Mental Health Awareness Month?
Started by Mental Health America, Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the United States since 1949—that’s 76 years of fighting against stigma and reminding each other we don’t have to face things alone. Alongside campaigns to support anyone who is struggling with their mental health, a host of activities take place all throughout the month to bring the community together and promote understanding and healing.
With that in mind, let’s look at some of the events around Austin that are helping move the conversation forward.
What’s Happening for Mental Health Awareness Month in Austin?
Greater Austin YMCA Virtual Events + Pizza Parties
All Month starting May 7 | Various YMCA Locations + Online
For those who have limited time on their schedules or aren’t able to leave their homes, the YMCA is hosting a series of free virtual events like parent support groups, and webinars covering topics like caregiver burnout, mental health in sports, and eating disorders.
They’ve also got Digital Detox & Pizza Parties at different communities to help families unplug and reconnect in meaningful conversations about mental wellness over a delicious slice of cheesy pizza.
Austin Creative Reuse: Art & Awareness
All Month starting May 13 | Austin Creative Reuse Center
What better way to connect with your children and highlight the importance of mental health than through creative play? Austin Creative Reuse’s free, family-friendly activities combine crafting and mindfulness to help participants learn more about how their minds and hearts are connected.
From creating a community mural, to giggling through Laughter Yoga, and planting a vertical garden, their events are focused on giving back to the community. To learn more about each activity, visit their online calendar.
Keep Going Run: Run for Mental Health
May 24 | Cedar Park
Mental health matters just as much as your physical health—and every mile can make a difference. Join us for the Keep Going Run for Mental Health, a meaningful event that gets people moving, talking, and showing up for one another. Whether you’re running for yourself, a loved one, or the community, you’ll be helping to raise awareness—one step at a time.
And if you’re up for it, keep the momentum going by heading straight to Sanando Nuestra Mente—a free wellness fair happening later that same day. Come for the run, stay for the self-care.
Sanando Nuestra Mente: Mental Health Fair
